When I first started reading this essay I assumed that from the small summary in the table of contents it would just list facts and special traits a person should have to be considered beautiful. Upon reading the chapter it became very clear that many things go into each of these topics (body, appearance, and sexuality). Obviously on the topic "body", cleanliness and hygiene are very important in being attractive and of course relate to appearance as well. This still stands in today's world and has probably become even stricter than back then. Today we need to use deodorant to cover the smell of our body odor as we go through the day and become sweaty. The absence of deodorant is noticed almost right away by anyone who stands to close to you. When the essay talks about bathhouses and private baths being eliminated due to fear or plague and other diseases, it lets you know that not a lot of the water was probably that sanitary back then, either that or just not changed a lot.
