Divorce is the dissolution of a marriage. The United States has the highest divorce rate among Western nations (Mooney, Knox, & Schacht, 2007, p. 160). In this paper we will address the causes, effects, methods of prevention, dealing and coping with divorce. The seven major causes of divorce are the changing of family functions, increased economic autonomy of women, increased work demands and economics stress and dissatisfaction with marital division of labor, liberalized divorce laws, increased individualism and increased life expectancy. Changing of family functions has to do with the period of industrialization where the main reason for marriage was "economic production and consumption, provided care and protection to its members and was responsible for socializing and educating children" (Mooney et al., 2007, p. 160). In today's society the function of marriage is more for companionship, emotional support, affection and love.
