Intellectual property rights (IPR) are components of the foundation of software industries. IPR refers to, "a collection of intangible rights of ownership in an asset such as a software program" (Freibrun, 2009, � 2). Each intellectual property "right" is an asset in itself. The law provides different means for protecting these rights of ownership based on their type. Copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets are the pertinent types of intellectual properties to software. "Each IPR provides a different type of legal protection. Copyrights, patents, and trade secrets are used to protect the technology. Trademarks do not protect technology but, the names or symbols associated with trademarks are used to distinguish a product in the marketplace" (Software & Information Industry Association, 2009, � 4). The growth of the Internet during the past decade has profoundly affected the way software is licensed and distributed.
