Pseudomembranous Colitis Definition An infection of the colon resulting in odious smelling diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. Etiology The main cause may be from the bacterium Clostridium difficile. Antibiotics such as clindamycin and cephalosporins causes the normal bacterial flora of the bowel to be disturbed and may be a cause for the infection. May also result from mucosal ischemia. Risk Factors The elderly and diabetics are at a higher risk for infection. Pathogenic Mechanisms The bacterium Clostridium difficile begins to overgrow and produces a higher number of toxins which lead to the severe diarrhea associated with the illness. Signs and Symptoms Diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramps, fever, pus or mucus in stool, fecal urgency, nausea, dehydration are some signs and symptoms. Lab tests/results Tests that may be taken in order to properly diagnose the illness are stool and blood samples, an abdominal x-ray or ct, and a colon examination.
