Ever since society has begun, there have been different sides of the spectrum. There are the natural born world shakers and then there are the through and through respecters of authority. In Cool Hand Luke, the society of a rural work prison is examined. The funny thing about prison is, that prisoners are there for disrespecting authority and or not being obedient to the overall societal views. However, once in prison the majority of prisoners fall into a routine where they respect and obey the authoritarian guards. The main character of the movie is a prime example of not respecting the authority of the "bosses." Luke has a blatant lack of respect for authority, and this is shown early within the film. According to Stanley Milgram and Phillip G. Zimbardo, people are obedient to authority simply because it is an role that they fall into. In Milgram's experiment, even though they knew what they were doing was wrong they did so without ceasing(Milgram 315).
