Deborah Shaw's article entitled "Blow: How a Film Created a Hero from a Top-Level Drug Trafficker and Blamed the 'Colombians' for his Downfall" considered the mistreatment of Latin Americans, specifically Colombians. Her analysis explained the ways in which the backgrounds of several key Colombian characters were augmented to conform to Hollywood's stereotypical view of Latin Americans, while also considering how the decision to cast several Spaniards (in addition to Cliff Curtis) for the roles of prominent Colombian characters was rooted in racism. Shaw began her article by explaining that George Jung was a key player in the American cocaine trade during the nineteen seventies and eighties and that he opened up the west coast of the U.S. to the Medellin cartel by organizing the importation and sale of vast quantities of cocaine. She then explained that the movie Blow, directed by Ted Demme, was based on Bruce Porter's well-researched account of George Jung's life entitled "Blow: How a Small Town Boy Made $100 Million with the Medellin Cartel and Lost it All."
