Talent is not the only attribute that distinguishes a painter from an artist. An artist understands the zeitgeist of an era; whereas, a painter relies more so upon intuition and estimation. As a result, the work of an artist can appeal to society as a whole and transcend the barriers of time. For example, Raphael was considered a superstar in the Renaissance; his knowledge of the societal milieu allowed him the title of an artist as opposed to a mere painter. Raphael's School of Athens accurately displays the individualism, humanism and classicism for which the era is revered and studied by historians today. For instance, the individualism of the Renaissance is rendered by Raphael's brilliant portraiture and depiction of philosophers in the School of Athens. Individualism was a new concept to the world of art after the ethereal focus upon religion in the Middle Ages. Portraiture became a common practice for commissioners of Renaissance art to expect from their craftsmen; likewise, Raphael included such painting on the frescoes of the Stanza della Segnatura (Hennessy 128).
