"My Oedipus Complex" is a short story written by an Irish mid XX century author Frank O'Connor, who was best known for writing comprehensive short stories as the one analyzed. His early life was marked by his father's alcoholism and ill-treatment of his mother, and actually, this may have had some influence on this story. In this story a young boy named Larry is forced to confront issues of jealousy and confusion. Larry is forced to confront these issues when his father, who he does not know that well, comes home from the war. The "Oedipus Complex" is a term coined by Sigmund Freud in which a male develops an excessive love for his mother usually accompanied by a hatred for his father. This is extremely evident throughout the whole story. Frank O'Connor uses the boy as the narrator. Therefore, the story is told from the perspective of a five-year-old. However, the language and word choice is quite complicated for a child. Using phrases like "these obscene words referring to my person" makes Larry seem more adult than he really is, which adds to his indigence at being suddenly trea......
