The United States alone produces 40% of the world's waste, yet in this country many people push recycling aside as unnecessary. What many Americans do not know, however, is that this country could conserve 1 billion trees per year and reduce the size of landfills by almost 1/3 just by recycling paper (recycling-revolution.com). When 60% of garbage going to landfills could be recycled, it is time for America to take another look (environment-green.com). In today's world, there are undoubtedly more Americans concerned with money than with the environment. Why should they make an effort to recycle when the recycled goods cost them more than the new ones? The truth is that even if recycled goods do cost a few cents more for consumers, overall, recycling (and the supporting of recycling by the buying of recycled goods) will save them money. On average, it costs the country $30 per ton to recycle. It costs the country $50 per ton to take trash to a landfill and $65-$75 per ton to incinerate it (recycling-revolution.com).
