Ever wonder why we use the word "half" in so many phrases such as: "half the time"; "glass is half empty or full"; "half-ass"; "half day"; "half-expected"; "halfling" (of LOTR fame); "half off"; "half the man I used to be"; "half the distance to the goal line"; "half-naked"; "half truths"; "half-wit"; "my better half"; etc.? I have (or halve); hence, the inane listing above. This fraction is so pervasive in the English language because it derives from the number "2", the second number we learn as a child. It's usage goes back a long ways when Kings showed their wisdom by threatening to cut babies in half (not sure that would have been wise had both women called the King's bluff). Besides everyone understands the mathematical inverse or opposite of "half" - that is, multiplication by the number "2" or to "double" - "double your pleasure"; "double-mint gum"; "double trouble";...whoops; different essay. All in all, conceptually, it's an easy value to use and gets the point across quickly - that being not quite whole. This shortcoming, of not being whole, is often used in a denigratin......
