It may seem a far stretch to compare today's 'recession' (as the politicians are reluctantly calling our current economic status) and the Great Depression of the 1930's, which lasted an entire decade. However, by studying the roots and beginning stages of each problem, a surprising number of common threads can be found. The Great Depression was a devastating period in American history, which taught the federal government many lessons and spurred countless reforms. Unfortunately, today's recession has shocked Americans into realizing that in order to halting the ongoing cycle of prosperity and depression is as difficult as changing human nature itself. The foundation of The Great Depression goes all the way back to the end of World War I, when Germany was left devastated by the Treaty of Versailles. For Germany, a huge depression followed, which affected most of the major European powers, including England. Eventually, America felt the depression through its trade with Europe.
