Non-Violent Protesting Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

For centuries, our society has been using acts of violence in order to illustrate conflicting beliefs. But are acts of violence more effective than those of nonviolence? There are multiple nonviolent cases throughout history that have been successful in attaining the protestors' goals. Evidence shows that nonviolent resistance is most effective when the protest has clear leadership, The Salt March to Dandi has proved itself to be one of the more successful nonviolent protests of the twentieth century. On March 12, 1930, Gandhi led seventy-eight Indian citizens on a two hundred forty-mile march to Dandi in order to illegally salt from the Indian Ocean. By the time Gandhi and his followers reached their destination, over fifty thousand people had gathered to witness Gandhi nonviolently protest against the British salt tax and British control over India. Soon, all of India was participating in collecting salt water and fighting for India's independence. The Salt March was a significant aspect in gaining India's independence from Britain.
