Distress and Delight Childrens experience of horror Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The aim of this essay is to analyse Buckingham's audience study "Distress and Delight - Children's experience of horror". The text examines the effect violent media has on children, this is carried out in the form of an interview with 124 children aged between 6 and 15 years of age. The study mainly recalls their experiences of being afraid after or during watching television, but families are interviewed throughout the study as well. Audience research today has developed rapidly compared to that of several years ago. The successive phases (or effects) were inspired or "influenced by different and historical social trends" (Ross and Nightingale, 2003:125). Earlier conducted studies mainly focused on mass-communications research as well as the passive stance of the audience in the media reception, where as new research provides a more cultural approach to understanding the media audience relationship. This therefore means that audiences are now perceived as individuals rather than an identical mass, this resulted in an ethnographic approach as it became evident that "interpretat......
