John Jacob Astor and John D Rockefeller - In terms of Motives, Managerial abilities and Ethics Motives: Astor was poor and had a dull life in the German village of Waldrolf and his motive was to move out from the dull life and discover something better so at the age of 15 he left for London and started working there. He wanted to trade fur and wanted to the richest men but had no education and little money. Even though he had little money and no education he became the richest man. Rockefeller motive was to be a successful man and wanted to be the richest man. John Astor and John Rockefeller started their carrier at young age and had the same motive but both of them achieved it in a different way. Ethics: "Trappers employed by the American Fur Company were ruthlessly exploited" John Jacob Astor made his employees work unlimited hours without paying them what they actually deserve. He made them work in hazardous conditions and in extreme weather without caring about their health. He took advantage of people by overpricing the goods when they desperately needed.
