The traditions of both the African American and Caucasian cultures are very much similar. I have found that the children are raised in similar ways, but the degree of respect is sometimes stronger than the other. I myself am white and my husband is black. We have two daughters together and I have learned quite a bit about "the way he does things and the way I do things". When I was pregnant with our first daughter, he had never experienced the whole roller coaster of emotions that come along with pregnancy. He explained to me that his family didn't talk much about being pregnant and sure didn't discuss things like that with the boys and young men of the family. Now in my family, the men were expected to 'help out" the mother to be or any other mother for that matter. The men in my family have all been present at their child's birth and actively participated in everything. I have seen that most men of either culture do help out a little, but feel helpless because all attention is put on the mother and baby.
