In "the half brothers", by Elizabeth Gaskell, Multiple people who can be blamed for Gregory's miserable life and its tragic ending. First off his mother, Helen, who, perhaps unintentionally, created a family dynamic that was highly dysfunctional and became even worse when she dies. His step father, who resents and blames Gregory for things that are out of his control, therefore viewing him as inferior and badly mistreating him. Before her death, Helen gives birth to the narrator, who is then raised by William to believe that his brother is worthless and though he is never out rightly mean to Gregory, he treats him as the second rate child, and so does everyone else. Aunt Fanny doesn't help the situation by clearly favoring the narrator over Gregory, and though you can't hold that against her, you can blame her for not taking action and just sitting back and watching William make Gregory miserable. When Helen died she had left behind a family for Gregory that, yes, did take charge over his physical needs, but would break him down emotionally, causing him to have no self appr......
