Alcoholism, Not a Disease Alcoholism is not a disease because everything in life is a choice. There is no identified genetic connection between alcoholism and the so called addictive genes, and ironically treatment programs confront the problem by making you take responsibility for your individual drinking addiction. In this report I look not to argue that alcoholics are in this for themselves, but that the treatment we provide be revised into a more effective way to help alcoholics. The most persistent myth propagated by advocates of the disease concept is that if a sober alcoholic takes a first drink, the effect is to cause a physical inability to stop. Clear studies have been conducted where alcoholics have been deceived of what they are drinking, when in actuality they were drinking alcohol. They were told that the beverage they are drinking is non-alcoholic. There was no effort by participants to drink a lot of the beverage, and no individual drank uncontrollably even after the alcohol was in their systems.
