Absolutism throughout 18th Century Europe Absolutism is defined as "a form of government in which the sovereign power or ultimate authority rests within the hands of a monarch who claims to rule by divine right and was therefore responsible only to God." This is how many European countries were run during the 17th and 18th centuries. Towards the end of the 18th century rulers started shifting to Enlightened Absolutism; absolutism justified by saying a ruler worked for the state. The three best examples of Enlightened Absolutist rulers are Frederick the Great of Prussia, Joseph II of Austria, and Catherine the Great of Russia. Frederick the Great was the son of Frederick William I. He was a very harsh man who loved the military life. Frederick the Great though did not. He and his gay lover actually ran away from the military to start a life together but when Frederick I found out about this he put an immediate halt to it. He had his son's lover executed while Frederick the Great watched. This made Frederick II extremely vengeful, and forced him to immerse himself ......
