The Odyssey by Homer Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Mycenaean times, the people of Mycenae believed that multiple deities influenced many aspects of their lives, such as acceptable social conducts, the concept of heroism, the relationships between men and women and their outlook on predestination. The finding of the first four books of The Odyssey, by Homer, has re-affirmed this outlook on the ancient civilization. The story begins ten years after the Trojan War has ended and all the Greek Heroes, with the exception of Odysseus, have returned home. The ancient Mycenaeans had a complex system of myths and legends based on multiple deities. Their entire perception of right and wrong was centered on the belief that each aspect of life had a separate deity reigning over it. In the first book of The Odyssey, Homer is re-enacting a meeting between the many deities. Although Zeus is the leader of the gods, many others are also mentioned including Poseidon, God of the Sea and Athene, Goddess of war and wisdom.
