What did the Louisiana Purchase do for the United States? In these paragraphs you will see how the United States expanded and got the Territory. A group of French explorers completed a three month journey on April 9, 1682 down the great waterway to the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico. They were the first Europeans to see the huge delta where the Mississippi ended. The leader La Salle read a document claiming the land and the Mississippi River for France. La Salle named the territory "Louisiana" in the honor of the French king, Louis XIV. Spanish conquistadors had explored the Mississippi River many years before La Salle, but Spain did not establish any colonies in the area. The Spanish turned their attention to the south, to the gold and rich lands of Mexico and Peru. The French settled in Louisiana and solidified their claim on the territory. France founded New Orleans in 1718, New Orleans became the capital of Louisiana four years later. France had been defeated by 1763. They lost most of their territory in North America.
