A board of education has many tasks and functions. Their main function is decision making. There are two standard methods for selecting school board members. The two methods are election and appointment. Election, by far is the most common practice, accounts for about ninety five percent of School board members nationwide (Ornstein & Levine, 2006). Some schools use appointment due to not wanting to deal with politics. Atypical school board member consists of a white male who is over forty years of age and is college-educated. Since most school boards meetings are open to the public, concerns and issues are brought out to meet a conclusion. School board member experience considerable pressure as they listen to and weigh the competing demands of citizen advisory groups, the business community, parents with special concerns (such as students with disabilities, gifted and talented programs, school based management committees), the teachers association is local and state politicians, who often are key in funding decisions (Ornstein & Levine, 2006).
