It was founded by Duncan Black and Alonzo Decker. The first handheld power tools didn't come out until 1916 when they introduced their portable electric drill. They expanded over the next 40 years through new power tools and acquisitions to make Black and Decker the household name that it is today. Nature/Extent of Demand Typically, Black and Decker is an average household name. The name is to power tools and home improvement as Ford is to cars and automotive. The market for Black and Decker products can be divided into two segments: Professionals, such as painters, construction workers, plumbers, electricians, etc, and do-it-yourselfers (DIY).
