Social security first started in 1935 to help out the elderly who were retired (Jurkowski, 2008, 82). It is a form of life insurance you buy into once you get a job, you must put in at least forty credits. Which equals ten years, four credits a year, in order to receive social security later in life. A person can start receiving social security as early as 62 years old, but they do not get as much money as a 66 year old person. Age 66 is when you can claim social security, but the longer you wait the more money you will get. Social security is 80 percent of people's single largest source of income for older adults, while it is about 20 percent of the only source of income for other older adults. This is one of the most successful policies for the elderly. People can get social security though their spouse, old age, or survival insurance (Jurkowski, 2008, 89).
