In November 1923 the crisis hitting the Weimar Republic was reaching its peak. It appeared that Germany might be tempted to reject democracy and support extremist groups like the Nazis. However instead Germany entered a periods called 'The Golden Years' under the leadership of Stresemann, the chancellor and foreign minister. On the surface it looked like Stresemann had solved Germany's problems but in 1929 Germany fell back into economic and political instability. This suggests Stresemann's policies were only party successful. On the surface it looked like Stresemann was highly successful in putting Germany's economy back on its feet after the hyperinflation of 1913. Firstly he introduced a new currency called the RETENMARK in NOVEMBER 1923. This stabilized the economy as workers were paid in wages that actually meant something. He also ordered striking workers in the Ruhr to return to work and negotiated the DAWES PLAN in 1924. This plan agreed that the French would leave the Ruhr if Germany paid reparations.
