The failure of English monarchs, during the 17th century, to establish a system of absolutism can be explained through the monarchs' inefficient tactics, radical changes, and their strong belief in divine right. After witnessing the success of Louis XIV's of France establishment of absolutism, England would soon see the King of Scotland James VI (who would now become James I), and his son Charles I, fail at establishing absolutism in England and see a constitutional government established. In theory, Absolute monarchs have complete and total control over every aspect of political and social affairs. In practice, it has been found that an absolute monarchs' power is really limited. Louis XIV's statement, L'état, c'est moi (I am the state), summarizes the fundamental principle of an absoulte monarchy, which is that soverignty (the exclusive right to control a government) is vested in one idividual.
