Brutal Warrior, Enlightened Leader, and Product of his Time
The popular perception of Genghis Khan is that of a harsh, brutal, unsympathetic warrior and leader who overran his opposition in support of his ambitious and self-serving goals. Yet Khan may also be viewed more sympathetically as someone whose views of his world were shaped by his difficult, early circumstances and whose actions as a leader ultimately contributed to the development of a more civil society shaped by rules and laws. During his rise to power and his reign as a leader, Khan would forever change the Mongolian empire, as well as that of others that stood in his way to achieve his goals. Many of Khan's actions had a great deal of purpose and influenced how societies other than the Mongols would evolve and prosper in later years. Although he is far from a saint, Khan was very progressive and had many well thought-out plans that contributed to his success.
