Centuries ago, criminology was based upon a theory known as demonology. This theory included many beliefs that were extremely irrational, including the presence of demons that would spark criminal behavior. People believed in things like witchcraft and even vampires and werewolves. Werewolves supposedly were humans who transformed into wolf like creatures when the full moon shone. Since the enlightenment, however, there has been a shift to the scientific method and people use empirical evidence to prove or discount things like demons, vampires and werewolves. The concept of the werewolf may have had some roots based in truth, albeit very thin ones. It is possible that the full moon may have had the effect of lunacy on people already predisposed to crime. Perhaps some violent serial killers struck, or strike, more often during full moons; leaving murder victims so badly mauled that people looked for any explanation other than the possibility that a human being could have done such a horrible thing to another.
