Men in the United States are held to a certain standard, especially a father, the father of the house is suppose to be there to provide for the family and to do what he can to make sure the other members of the family are happy and comfortable. This is the way I always saw it and to be the "man of the house" means you have fulfilled the qualities attributed to masculinity. The word "masculine" is defined as having qualities that traditionally are recognized in men, so whatever the popular thing for men to do in a culture defines the word. In the culture I chose to be in, I believe the man should always be working to take care of his wife and kids. A man who stays at home while his wife is out making money to pay the rent would not be a masculine man; he would probably be looked at as lazy. The thing about the definition of masculinity is that it says "traditionally" and traditions in the American culture have been changing since the United States came to be.
