Motivation comes from a person's internal needs and wants of something, and affects how he goes about fulfilling those needs. Motivation in the workplace has been studied by many professionals, and I have chosen a few theories on work motivation to present different ways of defining work motivation and how it can be induced by managers in places of work. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) was an American psychologist who developed the model of the hierarchy of needs in 1943-1954. It consists of five levels of needs: physiological, safety, social, esteem and self-actualization. The idea of the hierarchy is that the basic, low-level needs of an individual must be satisfied before moving on to the higher levels. When a need is mostly satisfied it doesn't motivate the individual anymore so they move on to the next level. For managing employees this theory can be taken into account when trying to understand which needs are most important for an individual and what motivates them.
