One of the most recent and frequently controversial topics in United States history is the legalization of marijuana for medical use. As of late 2009, a bill to legalize medicinal marijuana in Illinois is pending and may be passed. This prompted my investigation into the risks and benefits of using marijuana medicinally. Currently, marijuana remains illegal at a federal level while several states have legalized it for prescribed medicinal uses. However, the controversy remains as I seek to find if there are sufficient health risks of using medicinal marijuana to outweigh the health benefits. Marijuana is a long-existing substance, made from the cannabis sativa plant. The main active ingredient in cannabis is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, abbreviated as THC (NIDA). In addition to THC, sixty chemicals and compounds unique to cannabis, called cannabinoids, are also active ingredients in marijuana use (Guzman 745).
