Theme of Blindness in Shakespeares King Lear Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

King Lear is one of the most revered works Shakespeare has ever produced, but the cause of the tragedy in this prominent play is still actively debated today. It is my belief that blindness is the root of the tragedy in King Lear, and is the trigger that casts Lear's family and his kingdom into ruin. Throughout the plot of King Lear, Shakespeare demonstrates that blindness is not simply a physical disability, but a mental flaw which must be overcome. This deep concept is cleverly incorporated into the characters of King Lear and Gloucester. Both these characters are initially blind to the truth. In fact, it is blindness that is the primary cause of their bad decisions - Lear banishes Cordelia, and Gloucester stands in pursuit of Edgar. Nevertheless, it is their painful awakening which eventually leads to their death. Throughout the play, there are subtle but constant references to seeing and sight. Examples of this can be found from the very beginning of the play, when Goneril professes her love for Lear to be 'greater than eyesight.' The regular mention of sight builds tension......
