In this assignment I will attempt to compare differences in ideologies between memorials in different knowledge systems of South Africa. I will also show how different racial groups use heritage resources to show their biasness towards others, to discredit others or for political reasons. I'm going to focus mainly on the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg. The Apartheid museum aims to show how the white elected National Party government started apartheid and damned 20 million people to a life of servitude, humiliation and abuse. It shows how Nelson Mandela's election in 1994 along with their resistance, courage and fortitude liberated black South Africans. It is based on the rise and fall of apartheid. Within the museum you will see provocative film footage, blown up photographs from the time and many other items illustrating everyday peoples stories from apartheid. The museum boasts 22 individual exhibition areas which create an emotional journey through the apartheid era, showing the racial discrimination and how the majority struggled to overthrow the oppressive government.
