In an ideal world, with unlimited time and resources, the social researcher might wish to survey an entire population of interest each time information was needed on its behavior or characteristics. This survey method is termed a census and while it is considered to be a more accurate method, it is both expensive and time consuming. This approach can also be difficult to manage, bearing in mind that the population could be dynamic and changing within short periods of time. Sampling of the population is, therefore, the common and preferred method used by social science researchers when they want to perform an experiment, conduct an observational study or acquire knowledge on population attributes. Sampling is an important part of data collection and simply means that a smaller, group from the target population will be selected for study. According to Williamson et al the intention of the researcher is not to find the "best case" but to find a "representational sample that will allow for generalizations about the average or typical" .
