Throughout Act 1 of 'An Inspector Calls', written in the 1940s but set in 1912, J.B Priestley gradually contributes to the foundation for the Birling household's inevitable fall from grace. During the whole play, but primarily in the first act, Priestley makes use of the conflicting political views belonging to the family members, familial relationships under-mimed by mistrust, and the suggestion of a multitude family secrets, further emphasized by an overly auspicious opening, which, all combined, are greatly suggestive of the unstable footing of the Birling Household. Priestley uses the Inspector, who is arguably the characterisation of his own political ideas and views on society, as an obvious voice of truth, come to highlight the family's multitude of wrong doings, selfish judgements and lack of a sense of responsibility; therefore evocative of the shameful secrets within the Birling Household, thus leading up to the undoing of the household.
