In 2004, Alice Hohler wrote an article for the Financial News entitled "Companies figure out the expanded roles of CFO's". In this article, she states the increasing responsibilities and job description and the reasons behind the role change. Previously, the CFO was basically there to make sure the accounts were closed and that the business could be funded. The CFO now has a crucial role. Now, the CFO's role includes allocating capital, meeting targets, satisfying shareholders, making sure the company is transparent to the debt markets, etc. The CFO is the key go-between between the people who own the company and the people who fund it. CFOs have a huge say in running the company, in deals and compensation, for example, whereas the role used to just look backwards. There is some speculation as to why the role was required to expand.
