How is Utopia entertaining and in what ways is it instructive? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Utopia is a satirical novel criticising European society. It does this through Raphael Nonsenso's entertaining account of the island of Utopia. Thomas More utilises this discourse to instruct us about problems of European society, such as the wickedness of kings, the unfair punishments for minor crimes, stubbornness of thinking and the sucking up of courtiers to people in high positions. In this way, Utopia is both entertaining and instructive. The entertaining part is mainly done through the part of Raphael Nonsenso, and his account of Utopia. Sir Thomas More gave characters and places nonsensical names, such as Hythlodaeus (speaker of nonsense) Utopia (no place) and Anydrus (No-water) in order to make the account entertaining. The fact that the names are derived from Greek is "explained" in Book 2 that the Utopian language is of Greek extraction. Another reason More used these names are as a defence for himself from criticism, by claiming that the ideas he presented in the novel are just jokes.
