The work of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr Seuss, grew popular in American schools during the 1950's. Radically different from the literature used in schools, Dr Seuss' work kept both children and adults captivated. Despite the success, Geisel's work was criticised, as many believed that it sanctioned wild, unruly behaviour and tall tales. Despite the abovementioned criticism, one cannot underestimate the positive influence that Geisel has had on children's literature. When Geisel's work was first introduced into schools, it gained immediate success by appealing to young readers. Dr Seuss offered children educational reading material that was humorous and entertaining. Teachers soon discovered that the readers also found a sense of independence and individuality as they discovered that they think and behave differently from others. The material was stimulating, as it challenged their intellectual and moral notions. Furthermore, the twisty plot filled with fantasy never ceased to entertain.
