In the following essay, I will argue that one principal of The Communist Manifesto- The introduction of "A heavy progressive or graduated income tax" -could be applied to the Australian tax system to produce a far fairer outcome, and have benefits to the economy. I will also argue that the de-privitisation of industry, as proposed by Marx and Engels, will allow for a better healthcare system and reduced cases of fraudulent activity. Australia has used forms of progressive income tax since Federation, though these 'progressive' taxes were not true to the graduated nature Marx and Engels described. The nature of progressive tax is that the tax rate has a positive linear relationship with income- that is to say as income rises, so does the amount of tax you have to pay. In the current Australian tax system a tax free threshold of $6000p/a is observed, following that is a number of rates observed according to the income 'category' you fall within. In a true Marxist progressive tax, the linear relationship would be observed fully, meaning that there would be no 'categories'......
