Cute is the New Black? The new black - a phrase used to describe a sudden surge of popularity of a certain idea. Recently, especially in the twentieth century, this idea was dominated by a wave of "cuteness" hailing from Japan and it took Asia by storm. "Cute Power!" by Barbara Koh, a Newsweek magazine writer, shows just this rising trend and why Japanese's "cuteness" is increasingly, the new black. In her rather insightful article, Koh highlights the rising influence of Japanese trends and culture on Asians, primarily youths, and explores the various reasons for its increasing influence. The article was published on the Newsweek magazine in 1999, after the Asian financial crisis, when most Asian countries were struggling to recover from their crippled economies.
