I chose to read "Out There in That Dogs' World" by Sheila Thorne for my book report; it was definitely a riveting experience. I felt as though I could relate to the main character due to the author's vivid portrayal of her. When a state prison is constructed right outside the city limits of a small Louisiana farming town, Wanda (the main character) has difficulties watching the town fall apart because the only choice most people have is to quit their jobs and work as prison faculty, or shut their personal businesses down and leave town. Wanda learns how to find comfort through her beloved dog, Mister, when these issues affect her own life. Her parents eventually have to close their local convenience store when it begins to run them destitute, and Wanda's fiance leaves her to pursue his dreams of learning how to fly something other than a crop duster. She clings to the few stationary things in her life such as Mister and her empty house on the outskirts of town.
