Of all the mental disorders that cause distress in an individual's life, perhaps the most unfortunate is schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a shield for numerous other psychotic illnesses that include disruptions in virtually every aspect of human psychology including thinking, acuity, language, behavior, feelings, and communication. The DSM-IV-TR characterizes schizophrenia as a group of acute behavioral and cognitive symptoms that cause substantial impairment in an individual's life. Five distinct categories separate the symptoms, to make an accurate diagnosis two or more symptoms must be evident in the individual (Hansell & Damour, 2008). The first signs of schizophrenia usually begin in the teenage years and early twenties. Research shows that the effects of poverty tend to make people vulnerable to schizophrenia, this is evident as the rates of schizophrenic people are higher among economically impoverished groups.
