How did the Vietnam War affect Australians? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Vietnam War affected not only the conscripted Australian troops, but the entire population in various different ways. Lasting ten years, the Vietnam War was the longest major conflict Australia has ever been involved in. The anti-communist atmosphere meant that the Vietnam War was initially quite popular amongst the Australian public however this attitude continued to change throughout the duration of the war. Australia's involvement in the war was encouraged by the threat of communism and the belief in the "domino theory". The Domino Theory was the belief that neighbouring countries of a communist country would fall to their power, like dominoes. Australia also fought in Vietnam to fulfil their obligations of the SEATO pact, which had a reciprocal behaviour and acted as an insurance policy. Australia would have Vietnam's and America's future protection, if needed. Despite the large number of Australians initially supporting the Vietnam War, the number of protestors continued to rapidly increase.
