This story examines the close relationship between our past (what we were raised to believe and value), our present (what we want to believe and value, and finally our future (the beliefs and values we develop to fit our individual palce in the world around us). Our individual past only gives each of us a starting point for developing beyond our childhood and formative years to the person easch of us will eventually become. I felt close to this particular author and identified in some ways with the story bell hooks is relating. Although I am not black, I do come from a semi-poor economic background. Like her, I was always fed, clothed, and had all the things I really needed although I received very little else other than the values and goals my parents taught to me. I was able to connect with this author in that sense and I am sure that I frequently, although unknowingly hurt me parents with the snide remarks I often spoke. Looking back on my childhood I realize I should have been more grateful for the things my parents could give me and less focused on the things they could......
