At the end of the play Malcolm speaks of Macbeth as this "dead butcher". I partly agree with this statement; however I am more swayed that Macbeth is a butcher but not as bluntly as Malcolm had said it. In some respects Macbeth was a butcher; nevertheless Shakespeare wanted us to see more to Macbeth than just a "dead butcher". We know this through his use if soliloquies; showing us how self absorbed Macbeth was becoming, and what a tortured state of mind he was in at significant moments throughout the play. For example after the murder of Duncan he said: "...This is a sorry sight. ..... and therefore Cawdor Shall sleep no more: ...." Macbeths' asides and soliloquies give us clues that he himself does not think he is a butcher or want to be one. He only wishes to be feared as a great king. These soliloquies and asides are filled with emotion, regret and still his ambition shines through. "Thou'lt be afraid to hear it." .... " My name's Macbeth." The quotation: "Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown And put a barren......
