Narcotic drugs such as opiate, Percocet, and Oxycodone are prescription drugs that are used for patients with chronic pain. These drugs are a lot more powerful than a regular aspirin and they eliminate pain without causing loss of consciousness, given that the proper dosage is taken (Liska, 155). Opium was first brought to the United State's attention in the 18th and 19th centuries. From there, the drug abuse was apparent and rapidly increasing which led to the establishment of several laws such as the Drug-Free America Act and the Anti-Drug Abuse Act (Liska, 157). Narcotic drugs are made and prescribed to help people with certain health problems that sincerely need the drug. But today the drug is being abused more so than it is properly being used. In fact, a recent study showed that there has been a 96.6% increase in prescription opioid-related deaths from 1997 to 2002 (Hanson, 2010).
