Natural / unnatural narration - One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The question of reliable narration versus unreliable narration by Chief Bromden in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is a very complicated one. If you had not read the story, you would have to automatically assume that Chief Bromden, being a resident in a mental hospital, would be very unreliable, especially if you know of the constant delusions he experiences. But, after reading the story, I have to say I completely disagree. I feel that Chief Bromden is a very reliable narrator. It sometimes seems that we are able to get better insight into the hospital, Bromden, and the other patient's psyches through Bromden's misconceptions. A narrator's jobs are to report, interpret, and evaluate. Chief Bromden certainly reports and interprets what is going on in the ward, with great insight. Because all the staff and patients think he is deaf and dumb, he is able to know and hear things about the ward that most patients aren't aware of. The only problem with Chief Bromden as a narrator, some could argue, would be his ability to accurately evaluate what everything means. He doesn't understand ev......
