The "silent killer" is the nickname for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, the most common type of pancreatic cancer. This exocrine type cancer starts in the cells lining the ducts of the pancreas. These ducts carry digestive juices to the main duct in the pancreas (Shavers, 2009). Most pancreatic cancers are in the head and not in the body or tail of the pancreas, which has an even worse prognosis then the head. The average survival rate after being diagnosed is around 3 to 6 months. There is only a 5 percent chance of surviving pass 5 years. If the cancer has not spread to other organs and the patient can undergo surgical resection successfully, then the percent living past 5 years goes to 10 percent (Vormittag, 2009). Almost all surgical resections for the head of the pancreas, has a very low mortality rate between 0 and 5%. This has greatly improved since the 1960's when the percentage of mortality was at 25%. This is possible due to new surgical techniques, anesthesia, and preoperative intensive care. Unfortunately, about 80% of patients already have the tumor spread......
