Colonial and British concepts of Representative Government Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Representative Government is a form of government in which citizens of a certain land choose one or more than one representative to make decisions on their behalf. These representatives go on to represent the citizens in government affairs. In a way, the representatives are the citizen's "voice" in government. When the colonists first came to America and established colonies, they were governed by a distant monarchy, or their mother country, England. Over the course of a few years, the Americas began their own system of government under the now passive monarchy. British and Colonial concepts of representative governments are alike in ways that they both only let free, white men vote; however, they were different in that the colonies emphasized the importance of being represented in government and electing a regional representative, whereas Britain practiced a virtual representation as part of their government system.
