When the Constitution was signed it helped unite America. As situations in America changed, many amendments were added to the Constitution to try and adapt to the changing times. Slavery is said to be the key issue that resulted in the Civil War and the Constitution allowed the issue to continue and even fueled the division in the United States. The Constitution failed to be an instrument of national unity; instead it created tensions between the American people, did not allow for compromise, and led to the Civil War. Tension arose between not just the people of America but also between states through the passage of laws, which the Constitutin allowed. These laws caused a split between the people and states that overtime lead to tensions increase to a new level of violence. The Constitution hampered compromise because Americans shared a different view of the power of the Constitution regarding slavery.
