Cardiac arrhythmia can present itself in various forms, observable as distortions in the normal patterns and sequences of contraction in the myocardium, induced by numerous pathological states. Arrhythmias present in varying degrees of severity, some fairly minor, causing little discomfort and interference, and so are not routinely treated (e.g. atrial flutter). Others are very serious conditions, and if intervention is not rapid, may well result in death - the most notable of these being ventricular fibrillation. Overall, arrhythmias make a significant contribution to mortality and morbidity, the majority of sudden deaths are cardiac in origin and are related to ventricular fibrillation1. At this point in time, understanding concerning the mechanisms of arrhythmia development, along with the ways in which they are identified, have reached a fairly sophisticated level, identifying potential targets for therapeutic intervention.
